What Is Medical Software Development?
Medical software development involves engineering software solutions and platforms to support diagnosis, treatment, lab work, and patient care. Medical software can be broken down into three groups of systems:
Who We Build Medical Software For
Kanda Software builds medical software for eight types of organizations.
Medical Software We Develop
Kanda's medical software development services cover a variety of systems presented below. Most of the projects are usually a combination of two or three of the below, as the value is in how they work together.
Custom EHRs and EMRs
Kanda Software develops custom specialty-specific electronic health record platforms utilizing FHIR R4 and HL7 v2 interfaces, or integrates existing EHR platforms such as Epic, Oracle Health (Cerner), athenahealth, and Meditech with customers' existing solutions. An EHR connects history, lab results, and treatment plans on one screen and saves clinicians time at the point of care.Custom EHRs and EMRsLearn MoreLaboratory information management systems (LIMS)
A LIMS tracks each specimen from accession to signed report, manages the test menu, and keeps the audit trail labs need for CLIA. Kanda's LIMS teams include people who have run labs at Quest and NeoGenomics.Billing and revenue cycle management
Billing modules pull charges, ICD-10 and CPT codes, and coverage data straight from the encounter, then submit X12 837 claims and post 835 remittances. Removing manual re-entry helps practices improve revenue cycle management, with fewer coding errors and fewer late claims.Medical imaging software
Imaging software stores, displays, and analyzes DICOM studies and links RIS and PACS to the patient chart. For a global biotech company, a Kanda Software-built model that scores inflammatory bowel disease from biopsy images raised accuracy from 89% to 95%, with specialists reviewing the output.Patient portals and engagement tools
Patient portals give patients secure access to results, appointments, refills, and two-way messaging with their care team.E-prescribing
E-prescribing modules send prescriptions to pharmacies as NCPDP SCRIPT messages and check allergies, drug interactions, and formulary coverage before the order leaves the prescriber.Practice and hospital management systems
Practice management systems handle scheduling, registration, insurance eligibility, staffing, and reporting. Kanda Software builds practice management software as a standalone product or as a module inside a custom EHR. Automating these steps removes repetitive data entry, a common cause of clinician burnout.Telehealth applications
Telehealth platforms run video visits and remote medical consultations, then write notes, diagnoses, and care plans back to the EHR.Remote patient monitoring solutions
Remote patient monitoring software collects readings from blood pressure cuffs, glucose meters, and wearables, which lets care teams manage chronic conditions between visits and act before a readmission.Software for medical devices and SaMD
Kanda Software develops firmware, device connectivity, companion apps, and cloud platforms for medical devices, including SaMD. Teams follow IEC 62304, IEC 62366, and ISO 14971 and work inside the manufacturer's ISO 13485 quality management system.
Compliance & Certification Standards
Every Kanda Software medical software project begins with a mapping exercise to establish where protected health information (PHI) is created, stored, and shared. It's vastly more expensive to retrofit regulatory compliance post-launch than to build it in from the outset, and any gap in the process leaves patient privacy at risk.
Kanda Software builds every system to these regulations and standards:
- HIPAA
- GDPR, the EU regulations
- IEC 62304 and ISO 14971, ISO 13485
- 21 CFR Part 11 and CLIA for FDA-regulated environments
- ISO/IEC 27001:2022
Kanda Software builds these data security controls into each system:
Custom vs. Off-the-Shelf Medical Software
Choose an off-the-shelf platform when your workflow is standard, and you need to go live in weeks. Choose a custom healthcare solution when the workflow, the integrations, or the product itself is unique to your operations.
Four questions settle most decisions:
Our Medical Software Development Process
Kanda Software delivers its software development in the medical field in six stages, with the compliance and integration work kicking off during the Discovery phase.
- Discovery and compliance scoping (3 to 6 weeks)
- The team will map the clinical workflows, the data flows, the regulatory scope (HIPAA, FDA device class, target markets), and all of the EHRs and third-party integrations.
- The output is a requirements set, a compliance map, and a roadmap with an estimate.
- Architecture and prototype
- The architects define the PHI boundaries, the security controls, and the interfaces.
- The stakeholders then click through a working prototype.
- The deliverables are the architecture document and the prototype.
- Iterative development
- Agile software development runs in two-week sprints which end in working software, and the team is asking for EHR sandbox access as early as possible.
- Where appropriate, workflow automation will replace the manual steps (e.g., re-keying orders, chasing results, etc.).
- Testing, verification, and validation
- QA does functional, security, performance, and interface testing, plus usability sessions with clinical users, and produces the validation evidence that the FDA or auditors are looking for.
- Launch
- Kanda Software goes in with an incremental rollout, monitoring, and a rollback plan.
- Your team gets the go-live sign-off and a support runbook.
- Support and evolution
- It's the same team that does the security patches, the system updates for regulatory changes, and the next wave of roadmap items.

Gulf Coast Pathologists: a custom LIMS that cut manual reporting work by 70%
Kanda Software replaced the lab's disparate LIMS with a bespoke platform on AWS. The platform has a configurable test menu, EMR order integration, real-time sample tracking with alerts, a full audit trail, and AI-generated pathology reports which are then reviewed and signed off by the pathologist. Kanda Software captured 95% of the requirements from a single demo of the lab's current workflows.
The results were tangible: manual reporting work dropped by 70% and GCP can now onboard new physician clients immediately (previously that would have taken days). Real-time tracking has improved the lab's efficiency, and GCP is now in a position to offer the platform to other labs as a SaaS product.Gulf Coast Pathologists: a custom LIMS that cut manual reporting work by 70%Read the Case Study
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute: the PREMMplus hereditary cancer risk platform
Kanda Software built an API first, multi-tenant platform on AWS which runs Dana-Farber's PREMMplus algorithm (which looks at 19 cancer-related genes). It's one codebase serving two environments: a public site that stores no PHI and a licensed platform that has per-tenant isolation, customer-specific encryption keys, audit logging, and is FHIR- and HL7-ready. Both are in English and Spanish.
The public site went live in late 2025 at premm.dfci.harvard.edu and now has an NIH-funded implementation study. Clinicians can get a validated risk assessment in minutes rather than having to wait for a genetics referral, and earlier testing is associated with better patient outcomes.Dana-Farber Cancer Institute: the PREMMplus hereditary cancer risk platformRead the Case Study
Cost & Timeline
Most medical software Kanda Software designs and develops costs $60,000 to $600,000+ and takes 3 to 24 months, after a discovery phase of $15,000 to $40,000 that runs 3 to 6 weeks.
